Mexico Vacations: Staying Safe

You should take precautions whenever you visit an unfamiliar place; even if it is a grocery store. We have all heard about people who have been robbed or worse while vacationing in Mexico. However, you have to realize that this is no more dangerous than going to the Mall. It is just tragic that people who are supposed to be having the time of their lives end up in a nightmare situation. You can have a save time in Mexico if you follow these simple rules:

Never take a large amount of cash with you. Most places in Mexico will accept either credit cards or traveler's checks. These can be stopped if lost or stolen. If you lose cash, you are out of luck. Also make sure that you do not flash your cash by pulling out a large roll of money in restaurants or bars. This may impress your date, but it may also be noticed by bandits who will follow you to your room and rob you.

Cut down on the jewelry, especially the gold necklaces. They are too easy to be ripped from your neck. You do not have to draw attention to yourself as a rich American tourist. In Mexico, there is a lot of poverty. Many in Mexico feel that all Americans are very wealthy. They do not realize that we save for a long time to be able to visit their country. You are a target just because of your nationality. But you do not have to be. You can protect yourself by being smart and not falling prey to a crime.

Stick to the beaten path. Do not stray into unknown territory. People who have been robbed or assaulted in Mexico have gone to deserted areas where they assumed they were safe. Stay with others and stick to the populated areas.

You have heard about the water in Mexico. You are not used to the water so you will get sick if you drink it. You should drink only bottled water. You should also be mindful of the drinks that you order and whether or not they contain ice. Ice is usually made from the water and can make you ill. You do not have to worry about the food in the resort restaurants as they are up to standards and would never get any tourism if people continued to get violently ill whenever they visited. But definitely do not drink the water.

You should also avoid street food in Mexico. You are not sure about the hygiene or if any water was used to create the food. Those who have lived in Mexico awhile have gotten used to the water, but your system is not used to it. It will make you sick. If you do get sick, make sure that you keep yourself hydrated. Most people experience stomach cramps and diarrhea. This can go on for a few days until the water particles get out of your system and then you will be fine as long as you are a healthy person with a healthy immune system. Diarrhea, however, can be deadly for small children or older people.

Mexico can be a very nice place to visit, but just like any other tourist spot, you have to use common sense and take precautions.
